Notes
  • Significance: Built as a country residence in 1763-1767 for Benjamin Chew, a prominent Pennsylvania jurist, Cliveden is an outstanding example of Philadelphia Georgian architecture. Probably designed by Chew and Jacob Knor, a master carpenter, the stone masonry house has particularly fine interior woodwork. The house was the site of the 1777 Battle of Germantown during the Revolutionary War, and was extremely damaged by the battle.
  • Unprocessed Field note material exists for this structure: FN-238
  • Survey number: HABS PA-1184
