This is the building built by D.S. Johnston in 1907 at the Northwest corner of 3rd Avenue and University Street. James M. Corner, previously the partner of William E. Boone, was the architect. Johnston relocated his store here from 903 2nd Avenue in the Burke Building, opening what was touted as the largest music house in the West that October. The first 2 floors and basement were dedicated to salesrooms, with a recital hall spanning the 3rd & 4th floors. Johnston's heyday wouldn't last and they would be succeeded in this location less than 2 years later by Eiler's Music House. Later known as the University Building it was demolished in the late 1990s along with the rest of the block for Benaroya Hall.
