Damaged Monohull High speed craft Segesta Jet moored in Messina Harbour, Italy - 24 October 2007 - Photo by Mike Jack Seen through a porthole as we spin around and head off across the Strait. It's the Segesta Jet.. "Four people were killed and more than 80 injured, at least five of them seriously, on Monday evening when the 2004-built 672 TEU (Twenty Foot Equivalent Unit = one twenty foot shipping container) containership Susan Borchard collided with a fast commuter monohull in the Strait of Messina. The four dead were all members of the monohull's six-man crew, including its captain, 54-year-old Sebastiano Mafodda, and chief engineer Marcello Sposito, 41. The incident occurred shortly after 17.30 hrs, when the Segesta Jet, one of three such vessels operated by Bluvia, a unit of Italy's state railway company, left Reggio Calabria for Messina with around 130 passengers on board, most of them workers and students." |
