Summary edit

Description The almost severed stern section of U.S. Navy heavy cruiser USS Portland (CA-33), strapped in position by a heavy girder which had been installed at Tulagi, Solomons, following the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, before coming to Cockatoo Island Dockyard, Sydney (Australia). The dockyard repaired and reconditioned electrical and mechanical equipment in the ship which had been condemned as useless by the ship's officers. Portland had arrived at Sydney 30 November 1942 but did not enter drydock until 24 December after USS Chester (CA-27) and USS New Orleans (CA-32) were repaired. She left Australia after preliminary repairs. Following short stops at Samoa and Pearl Harbor, the ship arrived at Mare Island Navy Yard, California (USA), on 3 March 1943.
