Summary edit

Description
English: The Daniel A. Sullivan House, 314 West 5th Street at Jefferson Street, Jamestown, New York, January 2021. One of the most architecturally exquisite houses in the city, the Sullivan House serves as an excellent example of how the simultaneously popular Queen Anne and Colonial Revival styles hybridized with each other in turn-of-the-century upper-class residential architecture. The exterior positively brims with detail: the wraparound porch alone features pairs and trios of stout Ionic columns separated by keystone-adorned baskethandle arches, a low-pitched hipped roof undergirded by mullions and a dentil row, and Adamesque foliate detailing ornamenting the spandrels between the arches and within the pediment over the front steps. The remainder of the façade is no less richly ornamented: the flat-roofed corner tower features a festooned frieze crowned with yet another dentil row, a three-light dormer on the front gable comes framed by engaged Doric pilaster; the projecting gambreled side gables present a central Palladian window flanked by a pair of oval windows studded with keystones. The house was built in 1900 and its original owner was the Irish-born lumberman Daniel Ash Sullivan (1863-1904), co-president of the Union Lumber Company.
