Rumors of troops to be sent to thetown from the mother country became current.One noon the sheriff, casting his eye across theCommon, noticed the beacon on Beacon Hill wasprepared to be lighted. Hastily climbing theslope he quietly removed the signal which wasto announce the arrival of the troops. They camein September and with bayonets fixed and colorsflying, marched to the Common. Barracks wereneeded for them and the Manufactory House,where Hamilton Place now extends, was selected.It had been leased to Elisha Brown, a weaver,and he objected to vacating. The law was evokedand the sheriff and Hutchinson attempted to getpossession. A weaver leaving through a cellarwindow one noon was pushed aside by Greenleafwho entered and soldiers were posted in the cellar.Brown held the fort in the upper stories, andsuccessfully, for the soldiers were withdrawn in afew weeks.
