Description
Nederlands: BEZOEK VAN DER KNAAP EN ADMIRAAL KELDER AAN FREGAT VAN GALEN

English: VISIT OF VAN DER KNAAP AND ADMIRAL KELDER TO FRIGATE VAN GALEN

CYPRUS; LARNACA: 24DEC2006 PHOTO: HENNIE KEERIS State Secretary Ceesvan der Knaap and Vice Admiral Jan Willem Kelder, Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, were guests on board HrMs Van Galen (F834) on Christmas Eve. The crew, who had been away from home since August, heard in October that they would be steaming up to the Middle East and would therefore be coming home three months later than planned. However, the crew was given the opportunity to take a week's leave. Among other things, the visitors were given a demonstration of so-called fast boarding. After the communal Christmas service, the visit ended in style with "poeroet" (hot chocolate) and home-baked Christmas bread. Since last week, the Dutch frigate has been part of the Maritime Taskforce of UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) and monitors the sea area off the Lebanese coast for illegal arms shipments. The Dutch participation in the maritime part of UNIFIL lasts until 1 September 2007. In March next year, sister ship Hr.Ms. Van Speijk (F828) will take over the tasks of the Van Galen.
