English: Page 360 from De re metallica libri XII : quibus officia, instrumenta, machinae, ac omnia denique ad Metallicam spectantia, non modò luculentissimè describuntur, sed et per effigies, suis locis insertas, adiunctis Latinis, Germanicisq[ue] appellationibus ita ob oculos ponuntur, ut clarius tradi non possint. Eiusdem De animantibus subterraneis liber, ab autore recognitus: cum indicibus diuersis, quicquid in opere tractatum est, pulchrè demonstrantibus, atq[ue] omnibus nunc iterum ad archetypum diligenter restitutis et castigatis by Georgii Agricolae. Separation of gold and silver by nitric acid

A gold-silver alloy is combined with nitric acid and heated in an ampule (A), which dissolves the silver, leaving the gold behind. The silver is recovered from the solvent either by precipitating it in a copper bowl or by drying the solution in a distillation apparatus.
