Description

English: Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld delivers his remarks during groundbreaking ceremonies for the Pentagon Memorial on June 15, 2006. The Pentagon Memorial will commemorate the 184 people killed in the Pentagon and on American Airlines Flight 77 on September 11, 2001. Vice President of the Memorial Fund Rosemary Dillard and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Peter Pace, U.S. Marine Corps, joined Rumsfeld for the ceremony.

Rumsfeld speaks to the audience during the ground-breaking ceremony to mark the beginning of work on the Pentagon Memorial at the site where 184 innocent lives were lost when terrorist hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 crashed on Sept. 11, 2001. The memorial will have cantilevered benches with reflecting pools underneath each one in memory of each victim of the attack. Fifty-nine memorial units face one direction, 125 face the other distinguishing victims on board the plane from those who lost their lives inside the Pentagon.
