English: North Korean soldiers carry one of the five caskets that will be passed across the Military Demarcation Line to the United Nations Command Honor Guard soldiers during a repatriation ceremony at Panmunjom, Korea, on Oct. 9, 1998. The remains of what are believed to be five U.S. soldiers that served in the Korean war are being returned to South Korea. The remains were uncovered in Gaechon City, North Korea, about 50 miles north of Pyongyang. The U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division retreated through the area in late 1950 through a mountain pass called The Gauntlet which was occupied on both sides by Chinese soldiers. The division suffered nearly 5,000 casualties while making their way through. |
