Description
English: Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta, a native of Monterey, Calif., gives a hand shake to Staff Sgt. Shawn C. Vernon, from Fort Worth, Texas, a motor transportation chief with the Embedded Partnering Team, Combat Logistics Battalion 7, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, after presenting him the Purple Heart during his visit to Camp Dwyer, July 10, 2011. Vernon received a concussion after his vehicle hit and improvised explosive device while escorting an Afghan National Army convoy from Kabul back to Patrol Base Amir May 14. Cpl. Bryan N. Bigley, a motor vehicle operator with CLB-7, was also presented the Purple Heart during the ceremony for injuries received on a convoy June 2.
