Successeur de son beau-père, Lucien Belleville, à la tête de son entreprise de fabrication de chaudières à vapeur, Louis Delaunay aborde la construction d'automobiles en 1904, en recrutant l'ingénieur Marius Barbarou. Très vite « la voiture qui dure », selon le slogan de la marque, acquiert une belle réputation de qualité, sûreté, puissance et maniabilité.
C’est probablement pour cette raison que l’anarchiste Jules Bonnot et sa bande choisirent une Delaunay-Belleville pour perpétrer, le 21 décembre 1911, le premier braquage en automobile sur le sol français. [1]
