English: Plot of the delay diff. equation dx(t)/dt=-0.1x(t)+0.5x(t-3) with the initial conditions x=0 at -3=<t<0 and x=10 at t=0. The equation is a fairly simple approximation of the density of adult individuals of one species, where 0.1 corresponds to the mortality, 0.5 the reproduction rate times the propability of surviving the period 3, which is the time needed to grow adult. One sees that the initial discontinuity is conducted to higher derivatives at t=3,6,9 etc.
