On November 4, 2008, this was a message to the world from President-Elect Obama, when he said: "To all those who have wondered if America's beacon still burns as bright --tonight we proved once more that the true strength of our nation comes not from our the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from the enduring power of our ideals: democracy, liberty, opportunity, and unyielding hope." I'm making this photo of a billboard in Times Square from 2004 my contribution to the "A message for Obama" group as a sort of "write a letter to your future self" exercise for him. President Obama, do bear this in mind before you send anyone to bear arms. This photo was originally titled "Thieves Lair, 2004" and below is the original description. Advertising for truth, justice(, and the real American way?) didn't go over well in the Temple of Greed, when this and related messages precipitated legal battles. As an aside, I hate projectbillboard.org/ -- couldn't the site have been retired more gracefully, preserved somehow for at least a few more years? It was all about naming, Times Square nee Thieves Lair, and the ads therein over at Boing Boing the other day. |
