He is immediately taken ill.The broken idols pains are reproduced in his ownwaist and he has a headache with tremor, etc. Happily,his faith in Jesus is well-grounded and he soon throwsoff the bonds of superstition. He has since risen to bea captain in the army.* There are symptoms which some scientistsexplainas hyperesthesia. In my case No. 29, Mr. Tai wascalled to visit a woman. Neither she nor her familyknew he was coming. Yet when he was three liaway, she said: That old man is coming, and talkedfurther about him. Some cases haveabnormal strength. In this form of hysteria the standard tests often donot detect it, for the somatic symptoms are resultantand incidental. Thus in No. 101, Dr. Woods could notdetect hysteria from the superorbital nerve. Yet thevariety of the somatic symptoms confirms our analysis.I have observed: coughs and hiccoughs; huskiness;dumbness ; indigestion ; diarrhea ; constipation ; con-tractions ; paralysis; pains of various kinds; asthma;nose-running; frothing at the mouth ; blindness ; irrita-tion of the eyes ; swellings ; menstrual trouble ; tremor ;emaciation ; loss of color. From my records I notice that out of two hundredand ninety-four cases, ninety-nine were men and onehundred and ninety-five were women. As to ages, outof two hundred and ninety-seven, I found seventeenunder the age of puberty
