Description
English:
Eberstein Coat of Arms

Design for a Stained Glass Window for Christoph von Eberstein. Pen and ink and brush, grey, green, and red washes, over preliminary drawing in black crayon, 29.1 × 33.2 cm, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

The drawing depicts a landsknecht, a German mercenary pikeman, wearing the peacock feather and saltire crosses of the Habsburgs. On the right is the crest of Christoph von Eberstein, and in the background a landscape. These elements are set within an arch on which two soldiers—the one on the left imperial, the one on the right a Swiss confederate—engage lances with each other. Count Christoph von Eberstein (1502–27) was a renowned landsknecht commander. In April 1522, the landsknechts inflicted a heavy defeat on the Swiss confederates at the Battle of Bicocca (Müller, 276).
