  • Significance: The Manchester Street Station building is significant both for its architecture and its historical function. An important local example of industrial architecture which embodies industrial design, construction, and electrical engineering techniques of the first half of the twentieth century, it is also the primary building and core of the electrical generating plant and houses the boilers, turbines, and associated power generating machinery. The original 1903 architectural design was possibly the work of Alfred Stone of the prolific Providence architectural firm, Stone Carpenter and Wilson. The 1940s additions to the south elevation are significant as the documented designs of Paul P. Cret of Philadelphia, one of the nation's most well-known turn-of-the-century architects.
