DescriptionDetail - Ceremonial Cape (3415433574).jpg |
When the cleric turned to select another processional cross from the treasury, he revealed the beautiful starbursts on the shoulders of his cape. While the ornamentation would be striking on any surface, it is especially effective against its background of black fabric. The golden centers are delicate metal filigree domes. The rays spreading out from the center are metal that has been embossed with a design and cut to the desired shape. I believe we were told the cape was a gift to the monastery from a noble patron. I would love to know where the metalwork that decorates the cape was made. The golden filigree domes resemble metalwork from Arabia and India. At the Monastery of Na’akuto La’ab near Lalibela, Ethiopia. |
