Notes
  • Significance: The Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Roundhouse and Backshop Complex are all that remain of what once was one of the midwest's largest railroad ship facilities. In the era of steam these were the major repair and construction shops for the railroad, employing as many as 2,000 workers in periods of peak operation. During the twentieth century, changes from the construction and repair of steam locomotives to the construction of part for streamlined passenger cars paralleled developments throughout the railroad industry.
