Description

Ancient Stone Clapper Bridge at Dartmeet, Devon

Clapper Bridges were built on Dartmoor from about 1400 to carry pack horse trade routes over rivers and streams. This bridge has five spans with abutments and piers made up of large, natural boulders piled up unmortared, one on top of the other. Two of the spans are each crossed by a single broad lintel or clapper-stone, about 1 metre wide, but the other three spans now have no lintels at all. These were washed away in the great flood of 4 August 1826, it was then re-erected in 1888 but was damaged again in a subsequent flood.
