St. Michaels, Honiton—South Doorway. Devon and Cornwall Notes and Queries. 193 186. St. Michaels Church, Honiton.—The destruc-tion of this ancient church by fire on Sunday, the 26thMarch, 1911, is a calamity that will be mourned by alllovers of our ecclesiastical antiquities. This interestingbuilding stood on a hill within a mile of the town of Honiton,and tradition says that the selection of the site was due to themachinations of the devil, who removed the materials for itsconstruction to the top of the hill as fast as they werecollected at the foot. But the same story is told of manyof our churches up and down the country, which are builton hill-tops, and particularly of the little church of Chosenin Gloucestershire, where the tradition also says that thename of Chosen was given to it on account of the evilones insistence. It will be found, however, that most ofthe churches and chapels dedicated to St. Michael are builton hill-tops or eminences, and it is known that a smallchape
