| Description |
English: Devonport High School for Boys from Stonehouse Creek Stonehouse creek was filled in around 1974 otherwise I would be standing at about the high water level. This school on the northern bank of the creek was built as a military hospital for use by the army in 1797 by French prisoners from the prison hulks on the nearby Hamoaze water. This complemented the Royal Navy hospital on the south bank behind the photographer. The presence of these hospitals on the banks of the creek gave rise to the phrase "up the creek" ("without a paddle" = not expected to survive!). I believe it was only the Navy which rowed patients up the creek, the Army was said to prefer transport by land. |
