Text Appearing Before Image:
n-tages coming from intonation and gesture and expression, VI PREFACE. may as likely, when it comes to be plainly set down inprint and has lost all these aforesaid aids to eloquence,to be very poor stuff indeed. The author therefore has to be a good deal clevererwhen he addresses a blank sheet of paper than whenhe is talking to a sympathetic companion over thedinner table or across a fan. The poor dialogue-author, then, should be borne withrather than over-criticised, for the accessories of writtendialogues, an authors pens, his inkstand and hisblotting pad, are not inspiriting companions and donothing at all to help him to be wise or witty. Almost all the dialogues in this volume have beenselected from those that have appeared in the series, still continuing and entitled The World we Live in,in that excellent illustrated paper, Black and White \ A second series of pieces from the same source andwith the same title of Dialogues of the Day willfollow the present volume. Oswald Crawfurd.
