Description

Returning from Plauen to Gera in the Reichsbahn along the scenic Elstertal railway. I had arrived in Plauen along the top of the viaduct, arriving at the Oberer Bahnhof, and departed on this line from the Unterer Bahnhof. One of seveal impressiv double and triple decker brick viaducts in Vogtland, It is the second biggest brick bridge in the world. The largest , the Göltzschtalbrücke is very close by at Mylau.

Shortly before the end of the 1939-1945 war the bridge, built between 1846 and 1851, was destroyed by the German army. Repairs were completed in 1950 on this important route between Leipzig and Bavaria and its final state was achieved in 1962. It is 68m high and 279m long
