Summary edit

Description Native warm-season perennial loosely tufted C4 grass; stems are erect and to 60 cm tall, with densely hairy swollen bases. Leaves are 3-6 mm wide, green and often sprinkled with hairs that have warty bases. Flowerheads vary from digitate to a primary axis of racemes. Branches (racemes) are 4-10 in number, rigid, and widely spreading at maturity; they mostly lack spikelets near their base and lower branches are whorled, with 0.5 mm long hairs in the axils. Spikelets are paired, 4-4.5 mm long and 2-flowered, with hairs that don’t obscure the spikelet outline. Flowers from late spring to autumn. Usually found in woodlands on better soils and often in areas prone to periodic flooding (e.g. next to waterways and roadsides). Also occurs on sandy and duplex soils, but is uncommon on heavy clays. It has low frost tolerance, but high drought tolerance. Native biodiversity. When abundant it is considered to be useful for stock as it grows rapidly after summer rains, is palatable and has high feed value prior to flowering, but productivity is low to moderate. Strategic spelling from grazing improves production and persistence.
