DescriptionDinorwig Pumped Storage Visitor Centre, Llanberis - geograph.org.uk - 1736977.jpg |
English: Dinorwig Pumped Storage Visitor Centre, Llanberis 'Electric Mountain' describes the pumped storage hydro scheme which transfers water between Marchlyn Mawr reservoir at 636 m above sea level and the lower level reservoir of Llyn Peris. Power is drawn from the grid at night to pump the water up, allowing it to be re-generated next day when demand is high. The system can generate power very quickly, from zero to 1320 MW in 11 seconds, to meet sudden surges in demand that cannot be matched by conventional power stations. Maximum output from the 6 generators is 1728 MW; Dinorwig is the world's second largest pumped storage scheme.
Bus tours into the underground generating station run from here, and give a fascinating view of the size of the engineering required. Unfortunately, cameras are not allowed on the tour. |
