Summary edit

Description
English: Dismantled railway near Verney Junction. This footpath forms part of the Cross Bucks Way from Claydon Hill Farm to Addington, and here crosses the heavily overgrown trackbed of a dismantled railway that ran from Verney Junction, about 1km to the south-east, to Banbury Merton Street via Buckingham to the north-west. The line was constructed by the Buckinghamshire Railway Company (see also 412095) and opened in 1850, and the engineer was Robert Stephenson. It was worked from the outset by the London & North Western Railway who absorbed the company in 1879. As part of the 1955 Modernisation Plan, the northern part of the line was experimentally worked by Derby lightweight single unit diesel railcars, but the experiment was not a success, and the Banbury to Buckingham section closed to passengers in 1961. The railcars were then transferred to the southern Buckingham to Verney Junction section, but this was closed to passengers in 1964. The whole line was closed to all traffic in 1966, and the lifting of the track commenced in 1967.
