DescriptionDisused water channel, Saddleworth - geograph.org.uk - 486232.jpg |
English: Disused water channel, Saddleworth This is shown with a double blue line on the 1:25000 map, but seems to be only a wide trench dug across the moorland. John Illingworth has informed me that it was a 'Cotton Famine' road (unemployment relief works) built in the 1860s to provide work for those out of work because of the American Civil War. There is also one near Whitworth on Rooley Moor, which was paved and became a right of way. |
