Different optical patterns of blue phase liquid crystal droplets

Summary edit

Description
English: This photo was taken under an optical microscope with cross-polarizers. The image depicts how confinement and polymer stabilization can have different effects on blue phase liquid crystals, resulting in interesting optical patters. This photo was taken during a research project at the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago. The droplets are 10-30 microns in diameter.
