Summary edit
DescriptionDog's vomit slime mould (Fuligo septica or Mucilago crustacea ) - geograph.org.uk - 1633603.jpg |
English: Dog's vomit slime mould (Fuligo septica or Mucilago crustacea ) This unsavoury looking substance often causes concern and revulsion when found on bark mulch, rotting wood or elsewhere in garden. It does indeed resemble its common name and is also likened to scrambled egg, flowers of sulphur or the blob from outer space!
In fact it is a plasmodium,a mass of protoplasm without cell walls and only a cell membrane to keep everything in. It is really nothing but a large amoeba and feeds much the same way, by creeping over surfaces and engulfing its food: bacteria, spores of fungi and plants, protozoa, and particles of nonliving organic matter. At some point it starts to form a crust which dries off and releases powdery spores. My original ID of Fuligo septica has been queried by fellow Geographer Lairich Rig: the specimen pictured resembles Mucilago crustacea in that the surface develops a crust as it matures. |
