While many associate the kippah with Judaism, the skullcap is merely customary, whereas the tallit fulfills the Biblical commandment to wear specially knotted fringes at the corners of square garments including the prayer shawl known as the tallit gadol. The "tallit" in this picture lacks the fringes (tzitzit) that are on a real tallit.
