boy did not return.Search was made and after a long walk over hill andvale, they came upon the flock. The hoy was lying undera hedge almost frozen to death. The dog was moaningpiteously and licking and warming his face and handsmost frantically, and the sheep had gathered in ~acorner and were looking on in utter amazement. Itis said that when the searching party arrived, the shepherddog was almost frantic with )oj. It barked, it leapedand capered round the lad with a joy that only dogs arecapable of showing. The poor boy was carried home, whereit was found that his feet were so badly frost-bitten, thatthey had to be amputated. When the men started forhome with the boy, the dog rallied the sheep and startedwith them for its masters home, and when they were safelyinside of the sheepfold, he was so exhausted from thestrain he had passed through and the anxiety over thesheep-tender, that fell at the very entrance to the fold,and died in the performance of his duty. IX.SHADRACK. THE STORY OF SHADRACK FROAt THE TIAIE HE WAS A PUPPY. Shadrack was a hero, and honored by all men, For leading his drunken master away from the liqnor den. In a village in England lived a man by the name ofJohn Bog. Had the name been John Hog, it would havesuited his nature better, for he was a drunkard, and wouldlie in the gutter just like a hog. One day he left hishouse and went to a strip of woods in the outskirts of thevillage. He lay down under a tree and drank a bottleof whiskey which he took from his pocket. He was inthe shade, and it was comfortable and pleasant. Turning his face upward towards the sky. he went to 34 DOGS OF ALL NATIONS sleep. In a little while the earth, in the course of itsdaily journey, brought the sleeper into the sunlight, andit shone full in his face.
