Summary edit

Description
English: Dolerite intrusion, Tuff rock formationWales
  • Crags below Crib Goch are mostly developed in the Ordovician Lower Rhyolitic Tuff Formation, which are the products of eruption from and within the main Snowdon caldera around 450 million years ago.
  • Here a prominent rib in this ice-hewn valley side comprises a dolerite intrusion which is more massive and less shattered than the surrounding outcrops of tuff, and it has created a distinct step in the glaciated profile. The dolerite is a remnant of subsequent magma feeders to the surface eruptions.
