Donzaleigh Abernathy with (from right to left) American Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman, Gorman’s Friend, Ms. Abernathy, Gorman’s Friend and sister Gabrielle Gorman at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church. Ms. Abernathy was invited at the request of Amanda and Gabrielle Gorman, as the Speaker for the 50th Anniversary Service of tragic the Bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama on September 15, 1963, where young girls Cynthia Wesley, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Denise McNair were killed. Sarah Collins miraculously survived the deadly bombing.

English: Mrs. Donzaleigh Abernathy at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church as the guest of (right to left) American Poet Laureate, young Amanda Gorman, a Gorman’s Friend, Ms. Abernathy, a Gorman’s Friend and Gabrielle Gorman. At the request of Amanda and Gabrielle Gorman, Mrs. Abernathy was the Speaker for the 50th Anniversary Service to Commemorate the Bombing of 16th Street Baptist Church, Birmingham, Alabama on September 15, 1963, where young girls Cynthia Wesley, Addie Mae Collins, Carole Robertson and Denise McNair were killed. Mrs. Abernathy's dear friend Sarah Collins (12 years old) was the only girl to survive the bombing of the girls bathroom at 16th Street Baptist Church on September 15, 1963.
