DescriptionDouglas TBD assembly line 1938.jpeg |
U.S. Navy Douglas TBD-1 Devastator torpedo bombers pictured in various stages of assembly at Douglas Aircraft Company's Santa Monica, California (USA), plant. Note that the aircraft already carry the markings of Torpedo Squadron 2 (VT-2), which received its first delivery of Devastators in 1938. The TBD-1 BuNo 0300 was lost with the USS Lexington (CV-2) on 8 May 1942, BuNo 0301 was lost in a barrier crash 6 January 1939. Visible in the background is the DC-3-220A (c/n 2023). This aircraft was assembled by Fokker and delivered to Czecnoslovakia as "OK-AIE". On 24 August 1939 it was taken over by the German Lufthansa (as "D-AAIE Mährisch-Ostrau"). Damaged on 14 August 1944 during a day attack on Echterdingen, it was written off on 9 December 1944. The other plane seems to be an USAAF B-18 Bolo. |
