| Description |
English: Downland from bridleway, Stockton Wood This view is of the downland to the north-east of Stockton Wood from the tree-enclosed bridleway that runs for 0.8km just inside the eastern edge of the wood, and for only 100m in the grid square. Beyond the downs is the valley of the River Wylye. The downland here and just to the north of the woods, as well as in the woods themselves is the site of huge settlement covering 60 acres which started in the Iron Age and continued right through the Roman period and which reached its prosperity in the mid-late 4th century. The eastern side of the woods and parts of the downland here is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). |
