Drawing of Pompeii Fresco depicting Ariadna abandoned on Naxos by Henri Roux Ainé, 1870

Summary edit

Description
English: Drawing of a Pompeii fresco depicting Ariadne abandoned on Naxos with Eros by Henri Roux Ainé, 1870. Translated related text: Another painting from the House of Homer. It represents the well-known subject of Ariadne abandoned by Theseus on the shore of Naxos. In an attitude which is that of attention and remembrance, the fingers of her left hand raised to her chin, Ariadne seems to go over in her memory all her lost happiness, all her present pain; and Love, or his own Genius, aids her in this sad enumeration, by pointing out to her the perjured nave which flees on the horizon.

The drawing of these two figures is very well arranged: we notice a contrast of almost parallel lines, without however reaching the degree where this arrangement would be a defect. The torso of the daughter of Minos is of great beauty. A violet drapery protects her from the roughness of the shore where she is seated and whose pebbles must have hurt her beautiful bare feet. We notice, in addition to her gold necklace and her pendant earrings, two strips that she wears as a necklace, and which cross on her chest.

The vignette represents a few fish in the water or on the surface of a pond: the small cornice at the bottom is remarkable for the inclined crescents and the mystical cross-shaped tau with which it is adorned.

Note: The House of Homer is now called the House of the Tragic Poet.
