"The first of these two fragments is too poorly preserved for it to be possible to determine its subject. This man, whose chestnut hair is crowned with laurel, and whose brown skin is barely covered with a light down, was undoubtedly holding in his hand an object whose image is destroyed: these tree trunks, these rocks, which are behind him and on which rests his elbow, with its lacquer-colored drapery, were placed there for some purpose; this second figure dressed in red may have had other companions. The ravages of time on this fresco have been such, that they have produced in it the appearance of impossible faults in drawing, like an eye from the front on a figure in profile. In such a case, criticism can only proclaim its impotence.
