Summary edit

Description
English: Drilled repair holes on the southwest side of the statue "Music and Harvest", one of two statues that make up the work The Arts of Peace. The Arts of Peace are statues which adorn either side of the southern entrance of the Rock Creek and Potomac Parkway in Washington, D.C., in the United States. They were designed by sculptor James Earle Fraser, and erected in 1951. "Music and Harvest" was cast by the Fonderia Lagana in Naples, Italy. The plaster model of the work had been left exposed to the elements for some weeks, causing pitting and other damage. Although much of this was repaired, a great deal of damage remained. Additionally, the foundry's work was not of the highest quality. Both these factors caused the surface of the bronze statue to have extensive pits (some as much as a three millimeters deep) and holes. This left the gilding unable to adhere properly to the bronze, and it flakes off after about 20 years. When the statue was conserved in 1971, holes were filled by drilling them out, then welding a bronze rod in the hole. The rod was torched off and then sanded down to be level with the original surface. The statue was regilded using brush electroplating, but the gilding has come off in the 40 years since this work.
