Description
English: Driving from Nelson City to Pelorus Bridge, in the Nelson Region of New Zealand's South Island.

The Nelson region covers the northwest corner of New Zealand's South Island. Mountain ranges and Tasman Bay surround the region, which gives the area a Mediterranean-like climate.

The region is known for its year-round sunshine, golden beaches, and proximity to national parks, microbreweries, and boutique wineries. Also, there is a large community of working artists. In addition are locally grown produce, freshly caught seafood, waterfront restaurants, and historic streetscapes.

Nelson City got its name from Admiral Lord Nelson, well known for the Battle of Trafalgar. The region has a community that combines a relaxed approach to life with a get-up-and-go attitude. You can organise an adventure or begin an arty shopping spree in Nelson City. Every year the city hosts the New Zealand Wearable Art Awards. Here, art comes off the walls and is displayed by models in many curious ways.

Nelson City is one of the most beautiful and sunny areas in New Zealand. Stroll around the city on foot, or take a sightseeing tour. As the central urban hub at the top of the South Island, Nelson is a vibrant city. The Christ Church Cathedral overlooks the city's streets which offer boutique shops, art galleries, and alfresco dining. There's a wide range of local art studios, galleries, handcrafted jewellery, local fashion designers, and craft food artisans.

Explore the Nelson Provincial Museum, New Zealand's oldest museum, whose origins began in May 1841 as Nelson's Literary and Scientific Institution. Or there's the Nelson Saturday Market, a must-visit from 8 am to 1 pm in the Montgomery Carpark. The market is filled with fresh local produce, arts & crafts, with a range of colourful characters. Experience Nelson's history by wandering down the South Street precinct, New Zealand's oldest preserved street. Stroll through the peaceful Queens Gardens, or Miyazu Japanese Gardens, named after Nelson's Japanese sister city.
