Description

The Valley of fire State park in Nevada gets its name from the red sandstone formations, known as the Aztec Sandstone, which formed from shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago. It's located 50 miles Northeast of Las Vegas and lies next to Lake Mead. Rock art (petroglyphs) can be found in the park which were made by the Anasazi people during the period 300 BC and 1150 AD.

Several films and commercials have been filmed at least in part here, the films include Viva Las Vegas (1953); Total Recall (1990) and Star Trek Generations (1994). One episode of the UK TV program Top Gear was also partly filmed here.

Driving through the park opens up many interesting features and sights.
