| Description | We are now on the last leg of our tours for the day. We need to finish with Mtskheta and then head to my hotel for some much needed r & r. I have been awake all night and was thorough pooped. We are almost in the historic town now, but here are some of the modern buildings coming up on the township periphery, the the ancient Svetitskhoveli Cathedral as a backdrop. Mtskheta is one of the oldest cities in Georgia and is located approximately 20 km north of Tbilisi Due to its historical significance and several cultural monuments, the Historical Monuments of Mtskheta became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994. As the birthplace and one of the most vibrant centers of Christianity in Georgia, Mtskheta was declared as the Holy City by the Georgian Orthodox Church in 2014. (Mtskheta, Georgia, Sept. 2016) |
