Summary

Description

St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, Ireland

English: Statue of Saint Patrick in the west aisle of the south transept. This was, according to Christine Casey originally the effigy of archbishop, possibly of Fulk de Saundford (died 1271), created in the 13th or 14th century, then eventually damaged and afterwards turned into statue of Saint Patrick by fixing a 17th-century head to it. See p. 621 in Christine Casey: The Buildings of Ireland: Dublin, ISBN 978-0-300-10923-8. Quote from an information panel nearby: This statue was discovered when workers cleared rubbish away from a ruined part of the Cathedral in 1833. It appears to represent an Archbishop of the late thirteenth century wearing the pallium, a fine woolen vestment that symbolises his position as an Archbishop. The left hand may have once held a staff or crosier; the restored right hand is raised in blessing. While the lower part of the statue dates from the thirteenth century, the head was certainly much later. One clue to its date is the style of the mitre, which was used in the seventeenth century. Records from before the Reformation refer to a statue of St Patrick in the Cathedral. However, there is no way to tell if this is the one.
