Description

Official First World War photographer, Henry Armytage Sanders, took this photograph on 26 June 1917. It shows the Duke of Connaught saluting New Zealand troops on parade in the Bailleul town square, France, during the celebration of victory at the Battle of Messines, Belgium. Messines had cost the New Zealand Division 3700 casualties, including 700 dead. Slightly behind Duke Connaught (to his left) stands General Alexander Godley, commander of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.

In 1917, at the age of 30, Sanders was recruited to be the official photographer of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and tasked with documenting the New Zealand Division during World War One. Before this Sanders worked for the renowned Pathé Frères (now known as Pathé) in London, who were the world’s largest film equipment and production company in the early 20th century. Archives New Zealand holds a large collection of his work in the War Graves Branch and Historical Records record group [8398].
