Statue of Durga, made about 900 AD in Koh Ker, Cambodia. On display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio. Made of bronze. Durga is the principal form of the Mother Goddess in Hinduism. She has many incarnations, such as Kali, Bhagvati, Bhavani, Ambika, Lalita, Gauri, etc. In the Shaktism denomination of Hinduism, Durga (not Shiva) created the universe and sustains and, eventually, will annihilated it. Durga is seen as pure energy ("shakti"). In the most popular story about Durga, Mahishasura, the son of the demon Rambha, attacked the earth and banished all other gods. Durga engaged him in great combat, and even though he took many forms -- including, at last, that of a great buffalo -- she defeated and killed him. Here, Mahishasura's buffalo-head lies at the feet of Durga. Durga is seen holding a chakra (upper left; symbol of righteousness, or "dharma", and used to destroy evil), a bell (upper right; which confuses the evil), conch shell (lower left; which stands for the cosmic sound that destroys all evil negative forces), and club (lower right; which destroys the enemy). |
