Description

I am visiting San Francisco for the Pride weekend - one that turned out to be the most historic of them all, thanks to the Supreme Court rulings that legal same-sex marriages cannot be denied federal benefits, and that Proposition 8, which had banned same-sex marriages in California in late 2008, is dead on a legal technicality.

As tradition dictates, the Dykes on Bikes start the parade. Always a great sight. Lesbian Power!

The sign on this bike refers to San Francisco's lesbian community pioneers, Del Martin (1921-2008) and Phyllis Lyon (b. 1924). Lyon and Martin founded Daughters of Bilitis in 1955, which was the very first lesbian organization in the US, and their work was instrumental in decriminalizing homosexuality in California, and having San Francisco ban workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation. And when California first legalized same-sex marriages in June 2008, Lyon and Martin were the very first couple to be legally married. Martin passed away later in 2008.

Lyon and Martin's legacy also lives on in the form of a nonprofit women's health clinic in San Francisco, Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services (lyon-martin.org), which serves lesbian women and the transgender community; back in 2000 when I was a struggling twentysomething living in the Bay Area, Lyon-Martin Women's Health Services was my go-to place for healthcare.
