Summary edit

Description
English: An unlikely place to find a blue plaque, a similar house to the wonderful near neighbour behind the fascinating industrial estate.

More details here about Lena Kennedy. Lena Kennedy was born Helen Margaret Kennedy, subsequently Smith, but used Kennedy as her pen name. As well as this house in Leyton, she and her family used a shack on the plotlands at Cliffe Woods which Lena writes about so warmly and eloquently in her biography "Away To the Woods" which is well worth finding. Her residence at her death was not here in Wellington Road, E10 , but 29 View Road, Cliffe Woods. At that time, her name had become Ellen rather than Helen. An exhibition of her work is on during August 2009 at Hoo Library near Rochester Although her son Keith died in 1989, her daughter Angela Smith is agitating for some sort of recognition at the address in Cliffe Woods where so much of her writing was done and the inspiration for some of her fiction was derived, and about which she writes so fondly in her autobiography. She is buried at Cliffe; a street in Chingford in the borough of Waltham Forest is named after her. Her first book was only published when she was 64 years old, having drawn inspiration also from attending adult writing classes at Brooke House School at Clapton E5. A small estate has been built at the end of Higham Station Avenue in Chingford called Lena Kennedy Close with the usual lack of British explanation about the name and consisting of the standard late 20th century jumble of cars fronting blocks of controlled entry flats or tiny houses. The roundabout at the end of it is rather fun though, allowing handbrake turns at the end of the close.
