Description
Wide shallow basketwork dish made of grass or palm fibre, with a shallow foot base. The fibre is of a natural yellow colour with darker brown fibres forming the central circle with sectional pattern. The pattern is similar to the traditional Tswana design 'Tears of the Giraffe'.

Recorded in 1970 along with 4 other objects as part of backlog documentation work: 'Loan August 1897. Not previously reg.d.'

An old label on the object reads: 'Basketwork Dish said to be Kaffir but probably equatorial Africa. Mr. J. Rosen' with addtion in pencil 'Botswana - E. Dell 1998' (Elizabeth Dell was an ex-curator of World Art).

Collections from the Bechuanaland Protectorate, now the Republic of Botswana, are the focus of the 2019 Making African Connections research project.
