On 4 October 2022 first cholera case was detected in Lebanon at Menieh-Doniyyeh district of the North governorate. As of 12 October a total of 18 cholera cases were laboratory confirmed.

In neighbouring Syria, in Aleppo since August 2022 over 23,000 suspected cases were reported so far. As of 8 October, the cholera outbreak has spread in Syria to 13 out of 14 governorates.

Lebanon is taking initial preparedness interventions based on assumption on expectations of 50,000 cases. The request for assistance includes vaccines, hygiene kits, water testing kits and cholera rapid tests as presented in the Request Overview.

  • The cholera outbreak in Lebanon is evolving at an alarming rate. As of 25 October, there are 803 cases (suspected and confirmed) and 11 associated deaths. 305 of these case have been identified in the past 24 hours. Hospital infrastructure and human resources are struggling to handle the patient flow.
  • The spread of the disease is fuelled by limited access to safe drinking water, and related unsanitary conditions, included untreated wastewater, paired with an overall rise in socio-economic vulnerability levels across the country. An emergency cholera response is required to contain the rapid spread of cases.
  • On 13 October, Lebanon requested support from the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to respond to the cholera outbreak. The list of needs includes cholera vaccines, cholera rapid tests, medicines, water testing kits and hygiene kits.
