Title
Early Medieval coin : Series A sceatta
Description
English: An early medieval silver sceat of Primary Phase Series A; mint: Kent, weight 1.18g, Metcalf pp.85ff, c.680-690.

The attribution of the coin to a sub-type of Series A is not easy. The reverse is very similar to Series A1 with the semi-circular 'horns' emanating from each top corner; and the letters IP (P retrograde) on the righthand side of the standard. The tufa is larger than other illstrated examples, although only three are listed by EMC and no other by PAS (as of 2/10/2014). The inscription on the obverse, however, reads TIC rather than TIIC and the hair-line below the crown is shown by a row of pellets, both as A2. On balance, it is probably more likely the coin should be placed within A2 although with caveats regarding reverse design.
